Interpretive Summary: There was general need for a new effective and user friendly insect/arthropod repellent for use in protection against bites from mosquitoes thattransmit diseases such as Lyme Disease. The research led to evaluation of new compound called SS220 and it was discovered that the compound is as good or better than repellents traditionally used such as DEET and Bayrepel to fend off biting mosquitoes.

Technical Abstract: Optically active (1S, 2S)-2-methylpiperidinyl-3-cyclohexen-1-carboxamide (SS220) is a new synthetic arthropod repellent. A three-step chemical method suitable for practical synthesis of large quantities of the compound was developed. Quantitative laboratory assays using human volunteers were used to evaluate the effective-ness of SS220 compared to the commonly used repellents DEET and Bayrepel against Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) and Anopheles stephensi Liston mosquitoes. Against Aedes aegypti at identical doses, SS220 was as effective as DEET and both compounds were more effective than Bayrepel. The three compounds were equally effective against Anopheles stephensi. We report, that along with DEET and Bayrepel, SS220 could serve as a new effective alternate repellent for human use.
